Senior national selectors are likely to meet in Mumbai later this week to announce the 15-member Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup to be played in the West Indies and the United States later this year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has said. (BCCI) sources told IANS. The ICC has set a deadline of May 1 for the participating boards to announce their provisional squads for the mega sporting spectacle. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is facing the challenge of choosing a balanced 15-member squad based on the performance of the players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

Sources told IANS, “They (selectors) will sit on April 27 or 28 to choose the 15-member squad. It will be really difficult to name the team as some of the young players in the current IPL are really impressive.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant performed brilliantly with the bat as Delhi Capitals defeated Gujarat Titans in an IPL 2024 thriller on Wednesday. The DC captain was in excellent form and scored unbeaten 88 runs in just 43 balls with the help of 5 fours and 8 sixes. This knock rekindled the talk of Pant’s possible inclusion in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.

While the wicketkeeper batsman is being considered a top contender, former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull believes that he does not fit in the middle order right now and things would have been easier if he had batted at No. 3 after the rumor that Rohit Opening partnership of Sharma and Virat Kohli.

“He’s getting closer. Can he bat at number three? Because I go back to the team I’m watching (for the T20 World Cup), and he doesn’t fit in the middle-order. If he can, he will get one step closer to the boarding pass,” Doull said on Cricbuzz.

“He’s a better player than a slugger or a hitter. He comes and makes the path for his innings easier. That’s why I say he is a brilliant Test player. He is a good batsman. But I don’t think he is a player who comes out and starts playing hard, not in modern T20 cricket. This is why his numbers are nowhere near as good as they should be. So, my question is, can he bat at number three behind the captain and Virat (Kohli)? He added.
