Conspiracy theorists are linking the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the New York area on Friday to a rare total solar eclipse estimated to occur on Monday, April 8.

Although no casualties were reported, the earthquake that struck the northeastern United States was the third largest recorded in the region in the past 50 years and the strongest to hit New Jersey in more than 240 years.

Earthquakes pose a significant risk to life and property, so it is vital that we take the necessary measures and precautions to protect ourselves and our loved ones, Times News the report said.

What to do if you are indoors?

• Take shelter under some sturdy furniture, such as a table or bed
• Cover your head and face to protect yourself when squatting
• Stay away from glass, windows or anything that could fall
• Stay indoors until the shaking stops and do not run outside as reports show most injuries occur when people try to leave the building

What to do if you are outdoors?

• Stay away from buildings, trees, street lights and any power lines
• Stay where you are until the shaking stops
• If you are in a car, stop until the shaking stops and park away from any buildings, power lines or light poles

• Do not light matches or any type of fire
• Do not shout or scream as you may inhale dangerous amounts of dust
• Click on a pipe or wall to alert someone to rescue you
• Try covering your mouth and nose
