The BJP has lodged a complaint against Mr Shivashankarappa.

New Delhi:

Badminton star Saina Nehwal today condemned Karnataka Congress MP Samanur Shivashankarappa’s derogatory remarks against BJP leader Gayatri Sideshwara. The 92-year-old MP suggested that women should confine themselves to the kitchen.

Responding to these comments, Ms Nehwal stressed the need to move away from such views.

“‘Women should be confined to the kitchen’ – this is what Karnataka supremo Shamanur Shivashankarappa ji says. Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon’,” Ms Nehwal said in a post on X.

“What will the Congress party want from me when I win medals for Bharat on the field?” Mr. Nehwal asked rhetorically. “Why say such words when all girls and women dream of achieving greatness in any field they like? On one hand, we pay tribute to Nari Shakti. The Women Reservation Bill has been passed by our Prime Minister Mr. Modi It was passed under the leadership of, on the other hand, disrespectful to Nari Shakti and misogynistic people. It’s really frustrating.”

Mr Shivashankarappa, who hails from Davangere South, is a five-time MLA and the party’s oldest MLA. His daughter-in-law Prabha Mallikarjun was selected by the Congress for the seat in the upcoming elections.
