'We are aware': Center on Indians forced to fight Russia-Ukraine war

The Russia–Ukraine conflict has entered its third year.

New Delhi:

The Center today acknowledged that some Indians are trapped in Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine, and said the government is coordinating with its Russian counterpart to facilitate their release.

Yesterday, reports emerged that dozens of Indians were allegedly duped into military service in Russia. The unsuspecting Indians were promised supporting jobs, but were ultimately drafted into the Russian army, received misleading translations of documents and were forced to undergo military training contrary to their initial understanding.

“We are aware that some Indian nationals have signed up for supporting jobs with the Russian Army. The Indian Embassy has regularly taken up this matter with the Russian authorities concerned for their early discharge. We appeal to all Indian nationals to do their due diligence. We urge caution and stay away from this conflict,” Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement today.

The family of one of these men, Sufiyan of Hyderabad, along with AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi yesterday sought the intervention of the Center and the External Affairs Ministry to safely evacuate the stranded Indian nationals and take strict action against the fraudulent agents responsible. ,

Sufiyan’s brother Imran revealed the deceptive tactics adopted by agents linked to Faisal Khan, who runs a YouTube channel named ‘Baba Vlogs’. These suspects were reportedly promised supporting jobs, but were eventually recruited into the Russian army.

Nine Indians are reportedly facing danger and injuries within Ukrainian borders, with distressed families seeking help from the Centre. Mr Owaisi formally wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar seeking his intervention to bring back the affected Indians.
