CJI DY Chandrachud advocates paperless and digital courts.

New Delhi:

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud spends most of the time sitting in the courtroom during live broadcasts of important cases, but the chamber where India’s top judge handles day-to-day court matters remains behind the screen.

NDTV’s Ashish Bhargava takes you into his chambers for the first time and shows you how Chief Justice Chandrachud goes about his desk job.

The Chief Justice has a busy schedule that extends beyond the confines of the court. Court hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., but that’s not the end of the day for the country’s top judge. Administrative work continues late into the night and often includes after-hours court meetings.

Chief Justice Chandrachud, who championed paperless and digital courts, also set an example in his court. Among the computers and phones in his office, there were no mountains of documents to be found. The only document in the room was in his hand, which contained his schedule for the day.

Supreme Court General Secretary Atul Madhukar Kurhekar assisted him in meetings, cases listed for the next day and administrative work.

The Chief Justice’s desktop is located in the corner of the desk and is one of the core devices for handling critical cases. He responded to emails and examined case files himself. Even instructions are given via laptop.

“All our files are electronic. It’s so easy to use laptops and computers,” he said, noting that his office has gone digital like the courtroom.
