Athens landmarks, including the Acropolis, were enveloped in Martian-like hues as Sahara dust clouds, carried by strong southerly winds, swept across Greece.

The dusty shroud, casting an orangey-brown filter over the capital, heralded unseasonably early wildfires in the south.

The fire service reported 25 outbreaks in 24 hours. Relief is anticipated with a wind shift, clearing skies and cooling temperatures. Southern regions, like Crete, experienced scorching highs exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, in stark contrast to the north.
