Voting at home option for over-85s in Lok Sabha polls: Election body

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced on Saturday that for the first time, people above 85 years of age and those with disabilities of more than 40% will be able to vote from home in the Lok Sabha elections.

“We are ready to vote at home for people above 85 years of age and before nomination, we will send 12 D forms to their homes for selection.

“We have tried this earlier in some parts of the country during assembly elections, but this is the first time it is being implemented across the country,” Kumar said at a press conference announcing the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections.

“If they choose to vote at home, we will vote for them at their residence. Our experience is that most people want to come to the polls because they have always been part of our democracy… They will have if They come to the booth and there are volunteers and wheelchairs,” he added.

Kumar said there are 8.5 million registered voters above the age of 85 and 8.84 million voters with disabilities.

The CEC said there are 978 million eligible voters, of which 497.2 million are male voters and 471 million are female voters. Voting for the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha will be held in seven phases. Voting for 102 seats in the first phase will begin on April 19, and counting will take place on June 4.
