The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicked off at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday with defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). This was Ruturaj Gaikwad’s first game as CSK captain after MS Dhoni stepped down on the eve of the IPL 2024 opener. For Gaikwad, overseas stars Mustafizur Rahman and Rachin Ravindra took over the reins and led CSK to a six-wicket victory.
Mustafizur had his best ever performance in the IPL, taking 4//29 as CSK restricted RCB to 173/6 in 20 overs.
Ravindra continued CSK’s dominance, hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes in just 15 deliveries in a 37-run knock as the home side got the better of their chase in 7 overs 71 points.
However, Karn Sharma provided RCB with the breakthrough, removing Ravindra, who got down on one knee and bowled a tough sweep against the faster delivery. However, he stepped up to Rajat Patidar deep in the backfield.
An elated Virat Kohli was seen spitting on Ravindra after the CSK star’s attack. The video went viral on social media.

Kohli, meanwhile, struggled in his first official match in more than two months, scoring 21 off 20 balls.
CSK has not lost to RCB at home since 2008, thus maintaining an enviable record.
Mustafizul took his best-ever IPL figures of 4/29 in four overs, restricting RCB to 173 runs for 6 on a good batting line, including 95 for the sixth wicket A 50-ball stand between Anuj Rawat (48 off 25 balls) and Dinesh Karthik (38 not out off 26 balls) were the visitors’ only saviors.
Jadeja (25 not out off 17 balls), who brings a wealth of experience at a time when the run chase can get tricky, urged a rusty Dube (34 off 28 balls) to complete some quick doubles to finish with 18.4 The chase was completed in one round. By the end, Dube was finishing the chase quickly and he was growing more confident in Jadeja’s company.
