The Supreme Court on Thursday granted protection from arrest to Omar Ansari, son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, in a criminal case registered for alleged violation of the model code of conduct during the 2022 assembly elections. A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and PK Mishra issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on their plea challenging the Allahabad High Court order.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Ansari, said that the main accused has been granted regular bail in the case. Allahabad High Court had rejected Ansari’s anticipatory bail plea on December 19 last year and had said that considering the facts and circumstances of the case, a crime is constituted.
On March 4, 2022, an FIR was lodged at Kotwali police station in Mau district against Abbas Ansari (SBSP candidate from Mau Sadar seat), Omar Ansari and 150 unidentified people.
It was alleged in the FIR that on March 3, 2022, at Paharpura Maidan, Abbas Ansari, Omar Ansari and organizer Mansoor Ahmed Ansari called for settling scores with the Mau administration in a public meeting. This is a case of violation of the election code of conduct.
