Vijay Mallya reacts to RCB women winning WPL 2024 title while men’s team waits | Cricket News

Royal Challengers Bangalore lifted the long-overdue trophy by winning the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024. While the men’s team is yet to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) title, the women’s team has made it all the way in only its second season in the Women’s Premier League. As Smriti Mandhana’s side beat Delhi Capitals in the final on Sunday to claim the title, the team’s former owner Vijay Mallya Congratulations were sent to the team on social media.

“Hearty congratulations to RCB Women for winning the WPL. It will be a wonderful double if RCB Men win the much-awaited IPL. Good luck,” the businessman posted on X (formerly Twitter).

After the final, RCB women’s team captain Smriti Mandhana said she had unwavering support from the management after they failed to win the Women’s Super League title last year, which was a big factor in their victory here on Sunday. A championship goes a long way. She said the 2023 campaign, which saw her team beat Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to claim the title, “taught us a lot”.

By winning the WPL title, the RCB women’s team achieved something that had eluded the men’s team for 16 years. Mandana, however, thanked the team’s loyal fans for their continued support.

“Last year taught us a lot, as a player, as a captain and as a team. The management, the way they supported me in the post-season review… they’ve been through a lot, And a thumbs up (to them),” Mandana said in his post-match speech.

Regarding the championship victory, Nanbo said: “This feeling has not been fully integrated yet, and it may take time. It is difficult for me to express it with many expressions. The only thing I want to say is that I am proud of this group of people.”

“We had our ups and downs but they persevered and the way we crossed the finish line (tonight) was fantastic. Our Bangalore stage was really good. We suffered twice (in Delhi) of defeat. That’s what we’re talking about.

“The last league game was like a quarter-final, then a semi-final, then a final. In games like this, you have to peak at the right time.” Spin pair Shreyanka Patil (4/12) and Sophie Molineux (3/20) helped RCB beat DC by 113 runs before talismanic captain Mandhana (31), Sophie Devine (32) and Elysse Perry (35 not out) saw them return home with three wickets to spare.
