Hanoi, Vietnam:
Streets in Vietnam’s capital Hanoi were shrouded in thick smog on Monday, with visibility greatly reduced due to air pollution caused by high concentrations of particulate matter emitted by vehicles and fine construction-related dust.
The level of PM2.5 harmful small particles in Hanoi’s air late Monday was 187 micrograms per cubic meter, the highest among the most polluted international cities, according to AirVisual, which provides independent global air pollution information. Via mobile app.
“This is damaging to our health,” said Duong Kim Oanh, 58, a Hanoi resident. “I think the pollution in Hanoi is caused by the large number of private vehicles and fine dust from all the buildings, as well as the cold weather.”
According to a 2021 World Bank report, emissions from Hanoi’s 8 million registered vehicles account for 30% of air particulate matter pollution, with industrial emissions accounting for the other 30%.
Another resident, Pham Thi Phuong, said the pollution “can affect people’s respiratory systems, making them feel sick and even suffocate”.
On February 2, nearly 100 flights at Hanoi International Airport were delayed or diverted to other cities due to heavy fog and increased air pollution.
