Israel has a significant Iron Dome air defense system

New Delhi:

Israel today shared a video showing how it intercepted hundreds of missiles and drones launched by Iran in its first attack on Israeli territory.

Iran’s overnight attack was imminent but unprecedented, in response to a suspected Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus on April 1 that killed an Islamic Revolutionary Guards officer.

The Israeli military said that Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles towards Israel. But the military said 99% of them were intercepted before reaching Israeli territory, with help from the United States, Jordan, Britain and other allies.

“This is what a 99% interception rate looks like. Combat footage from the air defense system protecting Israeli airspace,” the Israel Defense Forces captioned the video posted on X.

The Israeli military stated that Iran launched approximately 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic missiles towards Israel.

Israel’s vital Iron Dome air defense system

Israel has the important Iron Dome air defense system, which has been intercepting rockets since it first became operational in 2011.

In the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the Iron Dome has been heavily relied upon to protect Israeli cities from frequent rocket attacks from Gaza and Lebanon.

It is part of Israel’s multi-layered missile defense system and is designed to intercept short-range rockets at distances of up to 70 kilometers.

Israel also has other missile defense systems, such as the Arrow system for countering ballistic missiles, and the David’s Sling system for medium-range rocket or missile attacks.
