New Delhi:

A speeding taxi plowed through a crowded market in East Delhi’s Ghazipur on Wednesday night, running over at least 15 people and killing a woman. According to reports, the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol and was caught by the public and handed over to the police.

The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Seeta Devi, a resident of Ghaziabad in neighboring Uttar Pradesh.

Of the 15 people who were hit by a car at Budh Bazaar in Ghazipur, seven were said to be seriously injured. They were all admitted to nearby Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital.

Sarita was one of those hit by the car and suffered injuries to her face near her left eye and her legs. After the accident, she told the media: “I was shopping with my daughter when I was hit. The market was crowded with people when the accident happened. The car rushed from behind me and hit me. My daughter was injured in her back and hand.”

The taxi was on its way to Mayur Vihar Phase 3 when the driver, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, crashed into the crowded Budh Bazaar area of Gazipur around 9:30 pm.

CCTV cameras installed on the road showed the vehicle suddenly losing control and swerving to the left, hitting a man and his trolley as well as other shops on both sides of the road. The car reversed and drove off as locals gathered and started breaking the car’s windscreen.
