Video: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapses after ship collision

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed early Tuesday morning after a boat collided with it, sending dozens of cars flying into the water. AFP the report said.

The Baltimore City Fire Department reported that seven people and several vehicles were in the water and rescue operations were underway.

Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore Fire Department, described the collapse as a “mass casualty event in progress” and said, “Our focus right now is on trying to rescue and recover these individuals.”

He said “some cargo or fixtures were hanging on the bridge,” creating an unsafe and unstable situation that complicated rescue operations.

According to videos circulating on social media, a ship hit the bridge around 1:30 a.m. U.S. time, caught fire and sank, causing many vehicles to fall into the water.

The 300m long vessel was en route to Colombo and left the Breeze Harbor Marina at around 12:45am.

The Maryland Transportation Authority issued a statement on social media Scenes”.

The 2,632 m long bridge is used by approximately 11 million vehicles every year.
