As Indian cricket great Sachin Tendulkar celebrated his 51st birthday on Wednesday, April 24, veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik recalled his good and bad memories with the great batsman. In a video uploaded by his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Karthik revealed the first time he saw Tendulkar in person and described the incident as a fond memory. However, the 38-year-old revealed that denying Tendulkar a century in a match was his worst memory with the ‘Master Blaster’.

Karthik recalled how he won the match for India by hitting a four, due to which Tendulkar was out on 96 runs. He revealed that even today he faces criticism for doing so.

“Well, I can give you a good memory, a bad memory. The good memory is that when I met him for the first time, it was on top of a flyover. We were going in a bus on the way to the airport and he “Climbed in between the car and the bus. This is the first time I saw that guy in my life,” Karthik, who joined him, said in a video posted by RCB.

“The bad memory was 97 not out. We needed four runs to win and I hit a six. So, I made sure he didn’t get a century. To this day, I feel very sad about that and rightly so. is also.” So, it makes sense,” Karthik further recalled.

For those unaware, Karthik is talking about the third T20 match against Sri Lanka in Cuttack in 2009. Chasing 239 to win, Tendulkar and Karthik put on an unbeaten 74-run stand for the fourth wicket to give India victory with 7.3 overs to spare.

However, it was not Karthik who deprived Tendulkar of his century. Instead, Lasith Malinga bowled the ball down Karthik’s leg side and the ball went for five extra runs, resulting in the match being over.

RCB captain Faf du Plessis also opened up about his first meeting with Tendulkar.

“I remember my first memory of playing for South Africa against India was just, wow. When you walked in, you saw Sachin batting there for the first time because that was the guy I looked up to as a young kid. I watched and always admired his consistency, I think that was the biggest thing that always stood out to me, but to see him for the first time and have such a big presence for such a small guy was something that stood out to me. It was different playing against him for the first time.” Faf said in the same video.
