Princess Anne’s son has revealed shocking insights into King Charles’ recovery in a new interview.
The king was diagnosed with a form of cancer last month.
King Charles’ nephew said the monarch was “in good spirits” but his recovery was taking “a little longer” than expected.
Peter Phillips, 46, said the king was “very frustrated” because he couldn’t do everything he wanted to do.
Phillips, the only son of Princess Anne and her first husband Captain Mark Phillips, added that his uncle was “pragmatic” and knew he needed to “focus on himself” to get better.
The father-of-two is currently visiting Australia as patron of the ISPS Handa charity.
During the visit, Phillips said King Charles was “pressing” his staff to return him to more royal duties, contrary to the advice of his medical team.
He added: “He was in good spirits but at the end of the day he was very frustrated.
“He was frustrated because he couldn’t continue to do everything he wanted to do.
“But he’s very pragmatic and he knows there comes a time when he really needs to focus on himself.
“But at the same time, he was always pushing his staff and everyone – his doctors and nurses – to say ‘can I do this, can I do this’.
“I think the most important message is that he’s clearly desperate to get back to some form of normalcy and he’s probably frustrated that his recovery is taking a little longer than he would have liked.”
He went on to tell Sky News Australia that the Princess of Wales was “fantastic” amid news of her health battle and said she and William were “doing the right thing” in balancing public and family life.
Queen Camilla previously told well-wishers that King Charles was “doing a great job.”
Yesterday it was revealed that King Charles was “very emotional” after having a private lunch with the Princess of Wales the day before she shared her cancer diagnosis with the world.
The Queen traveled from London to Windsor Castle on Thursday to have a heart-to-heart chat with her daughter-in-law.
