A report on Wednesday said the price of the iconic homemade vegetarian thali increased by 5% year-on-year in January, while the price of non-veg thali fell by 13%.
According to Crisil Market Intelligence and Analysis (MI&A) study ‘Rice Roti Rates’ estimates, higher prices of ingredients like pulses, rice, onions and tomatoes led to higher homemade vegetable thali prices in January, while lower poultry rates helped Non-veg tower rates are down.
According to the report, the cost of vegetable thali has increased as onion and tomato prices have increased by 35% and 20% year-on-year respectively. Prices of rice (which accounts for 12% of the vegetable thali cost) and pulses (9%) also increased by 14% and 21% year-on-year respectively, it added.
Meanwhile, the report said the fall in non-veg thali costs was due to a 26 per cent fall in broiler chicken prices in January compared to the same month last year due to increased production. However, the cost of vegetable and non-veg thalis subsequently came down by 6% and 8% respectively.
The drop in costs was due to a 26% and 16% month-on-month decline in onion and tomato prices, respectively, and higher domestic onion supply due to export restrictions and the arrival of fresh tomatoes from northern and eastern states, the report said. The cost of non-veg thali fell faster as the price of broiler chicken, which accounts for 50% of the cost, fell by 8% to 10% month-on-month, the report added.
