US alerts Bahamas travelers after report of 18 murders this month

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas has issued a travel advisory, cautioning people against traveling to the island nation this winter. An increase in violence, mainly due to gang-related activities, with 18 murders reported in January, has raised concerns about the safety of tourists.

US officials stressed the seriousness of the situation and advised against any attempts to “physically oppose” the robbery. Travelers were urged to reconsider tropical getaway plans to a Caribbean destination.

“The US Embassy in Nassau advises US citizens to be aware that there have been 18 murders in Nassau since the beginning of 2024. Murders have occurred on the streets at all hours, including daylight. Retributive gang violence has been the primary motive in the 2024 killings,” the embassy wrote in a release,

Tourists are advised to take extra caution when walking or driving at night, with the US emphasizing the need to keep a low profile, be aware of surroundings, and resist robbery attempts. Travelers are advised to review and update their personal safety plans in response to increased security concerns in the area.

Addressing the recent increase in violence, Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis announced measures to deal with the crisis, including roadblocks and undercover police action, the Nassau Guardian reports.

He said, “It may make you late for your appointments, or delay your plans, but it is a matter for the collective benefit of making our streets safer and our lives less affected by murder and other violent crimes. It’s a small price.” ,

Officials are also concerned about unregulated water activities, saying they may lack safety measures. The State Department said some sailors have made risky choices in the past. Commercial boat operators may operate their vessels without regard to the weather forecast, sometimes resulting in injuries and deaths.

Earlier, the State Department had raised this travel advice A level three out of four for Jamaica indicates a “reconsider travel” recommendation – the only major red flag is a “do not travel” warning. The department cites common incidents of violent crimes, including home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults and murders.

“Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts,” the statement warned. Travelers are advised to exercise caution and reconsider their plans to travel to Jamaica.
