If you tried to make a UPI payment on your mobile phone on Tuesday night and received a payment failure alert, you’re not alone. Institutions that operate UPI through various banks in the country confirmed that the digital payments system is facing disruption due to technical issues on the bank’s end leading to server outage. People in major cities like Delhi-NCR, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and even Jaipur are facing this problem.

Readings on the DownDetector platform further support this development, with UPI outage reports peaking between 7:00 and 9:00 pm on Tuesday. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) also shared the latest news through its post on X, which said:

UPI is used for mobile payments through apps like Paytm, Google Pay, PhonePe and even some banking apps. But most UPI payments are processed through banks such as HDFC Bank, ICICI and Axis. The UPI outage was largely attributed to issues with the two banks, and NPCI’s statement earlier on Tuesday confirmed our suspicions without specifically naming the entities involved.

If that wasn’t enough, you’ll notice people sharing their displeasure over the UPI outage on social media, especially those who don’t have any cash in their wallets and are stuck because the payment servers aren’t getting through.

As UPI payments have become ubiquitous across the country over the past few years, UPI numbers continue to increase massively and many people have stopped using or even carrying cash. So, when an incident like this happens and a bank’s UPI server goes down, people are bound to face problems while shopping or eating out.
