Swami Prasad Maurya, a prominent backward class leader in Uttar Pradesh, today left the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party. The 70-year-old leader – who jumped from BSP to BJP and Samajwadi Party – announced on Thursday that he will form his own political party. Sources say that the name of the party will be Rashtriya Shoshit Samaj Party.
Mr Maurya resigned as national general secretary of the party on February 13, accusing the leadership of discriminating against him and not defending him over his controversial statements on Ramcharitmanas and the Ayodhya temple consecration ceremony.
Taking a dig at his former party chief, the UP leader said, “Talks about socialism, but does not work. There is no personal grudge against Akhilesh (Yadav), but there is an ideological difference.”
He joined Samajwadi Party from BJP ahead of 2022 assembly elections and contested from Fazilnagar but was unsuccessful. His daughter Sanghamitra is Badaun MP from BJP.
“I got a chance to work with you (Akhilesh Yadav). But after our conversation on February 12 and my resignation (as national general secretary) on February 13, no conversation was initiated with me, due to which I “I am resigning.” Primary membership of the party,” Mr Maurya said in a letter to party chief Akhilesh Yadav, adding that there will be no reconsideration of the decision.
The leader stressed that he would work to strengthen the opposition faction India, which has been deadlocked with the parties unable to resolve seat-sharing talks.
He said, “India block is needed, will try to strengthen India block.”
