The Uttar Pradesh Police Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested a Bangladeshi national for allegedly staying in the country without valid documents and engaging in illegal immigration, officials said on Thursday. According to a statement issued by ATS, Rashid Ahmed Sardar entered India about eight years ago and obtained an Aadhaar card in 2016 using fake documents from West Bengal.

Sardar brought the Bangladeshi national into India illegally, the ATS said, adding that he was currently residing at Darul Uloom Deoband, an Islamic seminary in Saharanpur district of western Uttar Pradesh. He was arrested at Kanpur railway station on Tuesday while transporting illegal Bangladeshi nationals from the northeast, the ATS said.

“The accused was involved in illegally bringing Bangladeshi nationals into the country and preparing forged documents to allow them to settle here,” the ATS said in a statement. “He also provided forged documents to Bangladeshi nationals who were staying here illegally,” the statement added. The ATS has lodged an FIR against Sardar, the statement said.
