UP: Allahabad University teacher convicted for raping BA student

An assistant professor at Allahabad University was booked on Sunday for allegedly raping a BA student, police said. A case has been registered against the accused Ajay Sagar at Colonelganj police station, they said. Colonelganj ACP Rajeev Kumar Yadav said a third-year undergraduate student claimed that Sagar proposed to her but she refused. Yadav said that despite this, teachers from the ancient history department frequently called and sent her messages.

Citing the FIR, police said that on January 15, the teacher called the student to a park in Mumfordganj and threatened her that he would commit suicide. Thereafter, Sagar took her to his room and forcibly had physical relations with her, police said. The teacher also threatened the students not to tell anyone about the incident, the FIR said.

A case has been registered against the teacher under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, ACP Yadav said, adding that the matter was under investigation.
