United States: Shooting at Super Bowl celebrations in Kansas City, killing at least 1 person and injuring 21 others

At least one person was killed and 21 injured in a shooting in Kansas City, Missouri, where the NFL’s championship team was celebrating its Super Bowl victory.

Police Chief Stacey Graves said at a news conference that three people were “detained and under investigation in connection with today’s incident” outside the city’s Union Station. Graves said investigators don’t yet know the motive for the gun violence. At a news conference late in the afternoon, Fire Chief Ross Grundyson said 15 of those injured had life-threatening injuries.

Graves said she was aware of reports that some fans may have been involved in the hunt for at least one suspect. Approximately 800 law enforcement officials participated in previous rallies and marches, including agents from the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Hours after the bloodshed, authorities were still tallying the exact number of casualties and details. No children were injured, Graves said at a news conference.

According to police, a series of shots rang out near a garage near the station at the end of a victory rally following the march. A video posted on social media showed chaos outside the station as dozens of uniformed police officers with weapons drawn rushed into the building while dozens of bystanders fled in the opposite direction. Wednesday’s violence occurred on the sixth anniversary of one of the most famous mass shootings in recent U.S. history, which killed 17 people and injured 17 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The shooter in the incident, a then 19-year-old former student, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.
