UN worries Israel may target Iran's nuclear facilities, urges restraint

On April 1, Iran launched an attack on Israel in retaliation for an air strike on its embassy compound in Syria.

United Nations:

The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog said on Monday he was concerned that Israel might target Iran’s nuclear facilities, but the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will resume inspections of Iranian facilities on Tuesday.

Israel’s military chief said on Monday that Israel would respond to Iran’s weekend missile and drone attacks in retaliation for a suspected April 1 airstrike on its embassy compound in Damascus. Conflict in the Middle East escalates.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said Iran shut down its nuclear facilities on Sunday due to “security concerns” and when it reopened them on Monday, he kept IAEA inspectors away “until we see until the situation is completely calm.”

“We will resume tomorrow,” Grossi told reporters in New York. “This has not had an impact on our inspection activities.”

Asked about the possibility of an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Grossi said: “We have always been concerned about the possibility.” He urged “extreme restraint.”

The IAEA regularly inspects Iran’s major nuclear facilities, such as the enrichment plant at Natanz, which are at the heart of the country’s nuclear program.

Iran says its nuclear program is entirely for peaceful purposes, but Western powers accuse Tehran of seeking to build a nuclear bomb.
