Gaza City:
Hamas politburo member Ezzat Reshk said Israel was seeking a ceasefire agreement with Hamas to ensure the release of hostages before resuming military operations in the Gaza Strip.
Rishk said on Monday that Israel hoped to “reach a temporary agreement to release prisoners in order to resume war and extermination thereafter,” Xinhua reported, citing a statement.
Noting that Israel’s “attempts to free the hostages by force have failed,” the Hamas official stressed that “there is no alternative to a real agreement with the resistance.”
He stressed that a permanent cessation of firing is the only guarantee to protect the Palestinian people “and to stop the bloodshed and massacre,” adding that Hamas adheres to the position represented by the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops and the return of displaced persons to their homes. Their home is free.
Qatar, Egypt and the United States are brokering a deal between Hamas and Israel to exchange prisoners and achieve a ceasefire in Gaza.
Israel estimates that about 134 Israelis are still held hostage in Gaza, while Hamas announced that 70 of them were killed in Israeli air strikes.
According to Israeli human rights organization HaMoked, more than 9,000 Palestinians have been imprisoned in Israeli prisons since the conflict in Gaza broke out on October 7, 2023, and some of them died.
