“Iran may wait until after Eid al-Fitr on April 12 to respond to the attack on its consulate in Damascus,” he told reporters. I. “Such a response could come from Iran itself, but is more likely to come from proxy forces in Syria and/or Lebanon – most likely in the form of missiles, rockets and drones. There could be a group trying to take down Israel’s defenses.”

He said such an attack would trigger a “significant response” from Israel and the United States, which could include an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The United States is also leading diplomatic efforts to mitigate the risk of escalation. White House special envoy for the Middle East Brett McGurk contacted the foreign ministries of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iraq this week to urge them to encourage Tehran to retreat from the brink.

“The US is right to warn Iran publicly and Israel privately; the UK should continue to urge both sides to exercise restraint, support an end to the conflict in Gaza and commit to a political solution, which must be the only possible long-term solution to remove the risks to all .”
