U.S. congressional leaders reach agreement to avert government shutdown

Democratic and Republican leaders in the U.S. Congress announced on Wednesday that they had reached an agreement to advance 12 annual bills that would fund a range of federal programs for the fiscal year that ends on September 30 and could also avert a government shutdown on Saturday.

The deal approved by House and Senate leaders will pave the way for votes on stopgap funding bills to keep the government functioning before newly set deadlines of March 8 and March 22, giving lawmakers time to review and debate Full-year appropriations bill.
