Israel launched an attack near Damascus on Wednesday, the Syrian Defense Ministry said, the latest attack amid rising regional tensions since the conflict began. Israel and Hamas War In Gaza.
“The Israeli enemy launched air strikes from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, targeting multiple locations in the Damascus countryside,” the Israeli Defense Ministry said in a statement.
“Our air defense systems responded to the invading missiles and shot down most of them,” the statement added.
An AFP reporter in the Syrian capital heard an explosion followed by ambulance sirens.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said Israeli airstrikes killed two Syrian pro-Hezbollah fighters and targeted “bases of Iranian-backed groups including Lebanese Hezbollah” at two locations near Damascus.
Asked about the attack, the Israeli army told AFP: “We do not comment on foreign media reports.”

Since the outbreak of Syria’s civil war in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes against its northern neighbor, primarily targeting pro-Iranian forces, including Lebanese Hamas ally Hezbollah and the Syrian army.
The number of attacks has doubled during the nearly five-month war between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas group.
Israel rarely comments on individual attacks but has repeatedly said it will not allow Iran to expand its presence in Syria.
