New Delhi:
UN climate change chief Simon Steel said on Wednesday that governments, business leaders and development banks have two years to take action to avoid more severe climate change.
“We still have the opportunity to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a new generation of national climate plans. But we need these stronger plans now,” Steele said in a speech at the Chatham House think tank in London.
Mr. Steele emphasized, “Who has two years to save the world? The answer is everyone on the planet.”
He added, “More and more people want climate action across social and political spectrums, primarily because they feel the impact of the climate crisis on their daily lives and household budgets.”
Mr Steele also stressed that the climate crisis was disappearing from the crowded global agenda at a time when consensus is needed on how to help developing countries pay for clean energy and cope with extreme weather.
The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change said: “Let me be honest: passing the buck is not a strategy. Marginalizing the climate issue is not the answer to a crisis that will hit every economy in the G20 and is already starting. Cause harm.” Change.
Mr Steel’s slogan comes after the European climate monitoring agency announced this week that March was the hottest month on record and the tenth consecutive month of record-high temperatures around the world.
