Two Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force helicopters crashed into the sea during a training exercise, killing at least one of the eight crew members on board, local media reported.

Two SH-60 patrol helicopters were conducting anti-submarine drills Saturday night near Torishima, a remote Izu archipelago off the central southern coast of Japan, state broadcaster NHK and Kyodo news agency reported.

According to reports, the search for the missing crew members is continuing and both flight recorders have been recovered.

Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara reportedly said at a press conference on Sunday that the two helicopters were likely to collide.

U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel posted on X that he was willing to provide U.S. assistance for search and rescue efforts.
