Violence broke out between two insurgent groups in Manipur’s Tenupal district, sources said today.

Firefights have been taking place in the area since Thursday night.

“Today, a gunbattle broke out between two insurgent groups at Pelyang village in Tengnoupal district, 25 kilometers from Thoubal. Many village defense volunteers also went to Pelyang village in SUVs. Three insurgents were injured. The gunbattle took place within the limits of Tengnoupal Machi police station .District,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tubal.

A joint force of security forces, including Manipur Police commandos, came to the area to control the situation and bring peace.

In another incident, some men set fire to a sawmill near Parler. Three of them were arrested during a combing operation by security forces. Police recovered firearms and ammunition from them.

Tension prevailed near Kachin and Tenupal following today’s incident.
