West Bengal Police arrested Trinamool Congress leader Ajit Maiti from trouble-hit Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district on charges of grabbing land from villagers, an official said on Monday.
Ajit Maiti, considered a close aide of absconding TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, was detained on Sunday evening from the residence of a civic volunteer, where he locked himself for over four hours after being chased by villagers, he said. was kept.
“After receiving a complaint from villagers about land grabbing, we have arrested him. We will present him in court later,” the police officer told PTI.
He said that after receiving more than 70 complaints, the police registered an FIR against Shajahan Sheikh.
Most of the complainants claimed that Shajahan was actively involved in forcible acquisition of their land and atrocities on local women, the police officer said.
Villagers angry over his alleged links with Shajahan and his group, accused of land grabbing and sexual assault on local women, had attacked Maiti a few days ago.
The police action comes after a TMC delegation visited restive Sandeshkhali for the second consecutive day on Sunday and heard complaints from villagers, who are protesting against alleged atrocities by local leaders of the ruling party.
The riverine Sandeshkhali area, located on the Sunderban border, about 100 km from Kolkata, has been simmering with protests against absconding Shahjahan and his supporters for more than a month.
