Toddler beaten by XL Bully after climbing on family dog and needs surgery

A three-year-old toddler in Doncaster required surgery after being beaten by an XL Bully.

Police were called to the young boy’s home after he was seriously injured when he tried to climb onto the dog at around 1pm on Monday.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service took the boy to hospital, where he required surgery, while the dog was taken to a police kennel while inquiries continue.

Chief Inspector Emma Cheney of South Yorkshire Police said: “The family have acknowledged changes in legislation regarding XL Bully and have registered their dog.”

“But that doesn’t take away the danger these dogs pose, or the reasons why the ban is in place.

“All dogs can be aggressive, they are animals. But some dogs have a greater ability to cause harm due to their larger size and strength.”

She added that children should never be left unsupervised with dogs, including family pets that parents believe would “never harm” their children.

“A dog’s instinct to protect itself is to bite. Parents should ensure that children learn to respect their dog’s space and encourage them to set boundaries around feeding and rest times.”

Chief Inspector Cheney added: “Incidents like this are a stark reminder that whatever a dog’s nature or previous interactions with children, other dogs and people, they are animals and their innate instincts are Protect yourself, this can result in serious harm and injury.” Sometimes fatal. Act now to protect your children. “

Under new laws introduced last year, it is illegal to own an XL Bully unless it was registered before February 1. Dogs must be microchipped and neutered, and dogs must be muzzled on a leash in all public places.

It follows a series of high-profile incidents involving the breed, including the deaths of Jack Lees, 10, and Esther Martin, 68.
