Time-lapse video of record-breaking storms and flooding in Dubai goes viral

This ominous-looking clip appears to be straight out of a science fiction movie.

Dubai recently experienced an unprecedented weather event, with severe thunderstorms sweeping across the city. It affected air travel and caused flooding on streets across the United Arab Emirates, halting normal activity. The state-run meteorological agency said it was a “historic weather event” and that Dubai had not seen such heavy rainfall in 75 years. Many videos from the rain-stricken city are circulating on social media. Now, a time-lapse video showing the massive storm is going viral.

This ominous-looking clip appears to be straight out of a science fiction movie. The video was shared by an X user on the Weibo site on Wednesday. “Dubai: Time-lapse of massive storm causing historic flooding,” the post’s caption read.

Since being shared, the video has accumulated more than 3.8 million views and multiple comments.

“Wow, Mother Nature sure knows how to make a grand appearance in Dubai! The power of nature is truly awe-inspiring,” one user wrote. “Crazy! The beauty and pain of nature,” said another.

“I have been in Bur Dubai for many years. I have never experienced heavy rainstorms like those in Mumbai. This is special. In Fujairah, we had storms. Real heavy rainstorms only happened a year or two ago. The whole emirate was soaked by the rain. “Cars were flooded and floating on the water. ” shared a third user.

One user wrote: “Looks like they don’t have gutters there so all the water collects on the asphalt and concrete roads and turns into an artificial lake. If only they had a good way to collect all this precious water that would be awesome alright.”

At the same time, according to ReutersThe storm not only hit the UAE but also Oman. At least 20 people were reported killed in flooding in Oman, while another person died in the United Arab Emirates, which closed government offices and schools for days.

The storm initially hit Oman on Sunday and then the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, knocking out power, turning runways into rivers and causing severe disruption to flights.

In the United Arab Emirates, a record 254 millimeters (10 inches) of rain fell in the city of Al Ain, which borders Oman. It was the largest 24-hour period since records began in 1949.
