Yangon:
Myanmar’s military junta has sentenced to death three brigadiers who surrendered last month with hundreds of soldiers and handed over a strategic town on the Chinese border to ethnic minority militants, military sources told AFP on Monday.
“Three brigadiers, including the commander of the town of Laukai, were sentenced to death,” a military source told AFP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Another military source confirmed the verdict.
After months of fighting, hundreds of soldiers surrendered to the so-called Three Brothers Alliance in Laukai, northern Shan State, in January.
The surrender was one of the military’s biggest losses in decades and sparked rare public criticism of the junta from its supporters as it struggles to suppress opposition to a 2021 coup.
After the surrender, the officers and their troops were allowed to leave the area.
Two sources contacted by AFP gave no details on when the verdict would be handed down.
A military spokesman confirmed to AFP last month that three brigadiers had been detained by the military.
Under Myanmar military law, leaving a job without permission is punishable by death.
A junta spokesman could not be reached for comment.
