Lightning struck four people as they took shelter under trees during a violent thunderstorm near the Sydney Opera House on Monday, rescue officials said.

Paramedics said the four people were shot under trees in the Botanic Gardens, a stone’s throw from the port-side architectural masterpiece.

“They were both briefly unconscious,” NSW Ambulance Service’s Dominic Wong said.

They also suffered burns and developed heart symptoms, he told reporters.

He said the victims, two men and two women aged from their teens to their 30s, were treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Sydney Hospital in a “serious and stable condition”.
