Thousands of women suffering losses from pension age must be compensated, report says

Women who have lost out on state pension age increases must now be compensated, a landmark report says, criticizing the government for failing to inform them of the change.

The Parliamentary and Health Services Ombudsman recommended that the government pay compensation to the affected women after it concluded that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) “failed to acknowledge its failings and failed to rectify the issues for the affected women”.

It follows the release of a long-awaited report into how women are losing money as their pension age increases.

The statement said: “The DWP has also failed to offer any apology or explanation for its failings and has said it will not compensate women affected by its failings.

It added that the DWP’s “handling of these changes” meant “some women have lost the opportunity to make informed decisions about their finances”. This reduces their sense of personal autonomy and financial control. “

The report comes after decades of campaigning by women who say millions have suffered losses as a result of the change and need compensation after their retirement plans were damaged by the change.
