President Droupadi Murmu conferred India’s highest civilian honour, ‘Bharat Ratna’, to former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, a strong supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party, at his official residence on Sunday. .

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and The ceremony was attended by Mr Advani’s family.

President Murmu was said to have presented “Bharat Ratna” to Mr Advani at his official residence.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan said Mr Advani was a doyen of Indian politics who had served the country with unwavering dedication and distinction for more than seven decades.

Born in Karachi in 1927, he moved to India in 1947 under the background of the partition of India and Pakistan.

The Presidential Palace said that with his cultural nationalist vision, he worked hard for decades and traveled across the country to bring about a transformation in the socio-political landscape.

“When the Emergency put India’s democracy at risk, the tireless crusader in him helped India resist authoritarian tendencies,” it said in a post on X, sharing a photo of the ceremony.

Mr Advani (96) served as Deputy Prime Minister from June 2002 to May 2004 and as Union Home Minister from October 1999 to May 2004. He served as the BJP president several times – from 1986 to 1990, 1993 to 1998 and 2004 to 2005.
