Seventeen people, including a girl, were rescued, they were attracted to medical attention and were in good health, said Juan Salas, director of the country’s civil defense. A survivor reported that about 40 people were on a boat, before they were capped.

“It occurred close to the coast; it is possible that some people exited,” Salas said, who speculated that the boat sank at a depth of 600 meters (1,970 ft) at a depth of 500 meters (1,640 ft). He said that the search was being interrupted by strong waves and seabed conditions.

The boat consisted of hati and migrants of the Republic of Dominican.

The number of illegal trips for Puerto Rico by the sea in Dominican Republic Water has increased considerably over the years. The International Organization for Migration documented at least 321 deaths and disappearance of migrants in 2022, the highest number since 2014.
