The Army establishes an elite unit dedicated to research on 6G, artificial intelligence and key military technologies

High-tech units will conduct technology exploration, evaluation, and development.

New Delhi:

In view of the changing nature of the field, the Indian Army has formed an elite force to conduct research and evaluation of future military communications technologies such as 6G, artificial intelligence, machine learning and quantum computing.

The Signal Technology Assessment and Adaptation Group (STEAG) is tasked with fostering technologies that span the entire spectrum of wired and wireless systems, officials said.

They said the formation of STEAG is part of the Army’s efforts to develop technologies that take into account future battlefields.

“This will be a best-in-class organization, the first of its kind with the capability to leverage niche technologies, leverage cutting-edge solutions and identify cases suitable for defense applications by promoting collaboration with academia and industry,” an official said organization.”

He said this elite force will focus on all upcoming key technology areas, including electronic switching, mobile communications, software-defined radio, electronic warfare systems, 5G and 6G networks, quantum technology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc.

The high-tech unit will carry out technology exploration, evaluation, development and management of core ICT solutions and provide user interface support by maintaining and upgrading contemporary technologies available in the environment, the official added.

Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande has been emphasizing the need for the army to acquire new technologies in view of the changing nature of warfare.

“STEAG is aligned with the mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Start-Up India and will help bridge the gap between the armed forces and industry and academia,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

He said the new center of excellence is expected to be a game changer in promoting self-reliance in high-end communications technology, which has so far been monopolized by selected countries with developed economies and research ecosystems.

The Army believes communications will become an important component of military operations.

“With rapidly evolving battlefield technologies, the side with better communications technology and the ability to connect its components for information sharing will have an advantage over its adversary,” another official said.

He said modern warfare requires the introduction of new equipment to provide seamless communication support to troops and formations during operations.

“To absorb this technological advancement, the Indian Army has formed this breakthrough technology-oriented force, STEAG, which will enhance its capabilities in the digital domain,” he added.
