London will be the world’s most congested city by 2023, with commuters taking an average of 37 minutes and 20 seconds to travel a distance of 10 kilometers, a new study has found.This report is provided by Amsterdam-based positioning technology expert TomTom Research shows people in the UK capital lose 148 hours a year during peak hours.

London is followed by Dublin, the capital of Ireland, where by 2023 it will take people an average of 29 minutes and 30 seconds to cover a 10-kilometer distance. However, the average speed during rush hour in Dublin is 16km/h, resulting in commuters losing 158 hours per year. During peak hours – highest among top 10.

The report shows that Torontonians spend an average of 29 minutes walking 10 kilometers, ranking third. But of the top 10 most congested cities in the world, commuters in Toronto lose the least time each year during rush hour. With the average peak hour speed at 18 km/h, Toronto commuters lose 98 hours a year.

Milan, the “world’s fashion capital”, ranks fourth. By 2023, it will take people an average of 28 minutes and 50 seconds to run 10 kilometers. Italian cities’ rush hour costs commuters 137 hours.

Lima, Peru, is close behind, taking 28 minutes and 30 seconds to travel 10 kilometers, resulting in commuters losing 157 hours a year during rush hour.

Bengaluru and Pune ranked sixth and seventh respectively.

The report shows that Bengaluru’s average travel time per 10 kilometers last year was 28 minutes and 10 seconds, while Pune was slightly behind the IT capital, taking 27 minutes and 50 seconds to cover a similar distance.

Pune is followed by Bucharest in Romania, Manila in the Philippines and Brussels in Belgium at eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.

In Bucharest, Romanians need an average of 27 minutes and 40 seconds to cover a distance of 10 kilometers, while commuters in Manila need 27 minutes and 20 seconds, and Brussels needs 27 minutes to cover a similar distance.
