Two US citizens have been fined for allegedly attending a religious event in Assam’s Sonitpur district while visiting India on tourist visas, officials said on Sunday.

According to Sonitpur Deputy Superintendent of Police Madhurima Das, the two US citizens attended a religious gathering at the Baptist Christian Hospital on February 1.

“The police detained them after receiving information. We conducted an investigation and found that they were involved in religious gatherings,” she said.

They were each fined $500 (roughly Rs. 41,500) before being allowed to leave, she added.

Troopers said the two men have been identified as Jon Matthew Boone and Michael James Flincham.
