Teesside A19 reopened after controlled explosion

Bomb disposal experts were called to a suspected explosive device near a busy A-road in Teesside.

A section of the A19 motorway was closed in both directions after the device was discovered on Wednesday afternoon, causing traffic congestion.

Cleveland police said just after 4 p.m. that the blockade was caused by a suspected explosive device, which had been sent to the garage for examination by experts.

The A19 has been closed between the A689 near Billingham and the A179 towards Hartlepool, with the National Highways Agency warning motorists may expect long delays.

Police are asking drivers to find alternative routes.

Officials said the device was inspected and then “disposed of in a controlled explosion on nearby farmland.”

More than three hours later, the road reopened.

A man suffered life-threatening injuries after a four-car collision on the A19 near Kirby Sigston on Tuesday. He was one of six people taken to hospital for treatment.

Both northbound and southbound lanes are closed.

Five ambulances, one air ambulance and a captain were among the 999 crews who responded to the scene.
