Google-owned YouTube is reportedly laying off at least 100 employees from its creator management and operations teams.
YouTube Chief Business Officer Mary Ellen Ko announced the layoffs internally, TubeFilter reports. “YouTube will bring together its content creator management teams in each country under dedicated central leadership,” the report said.
YouTube’s music and support teams are also reportedly being reorganized. In an internal staff memo, Coe said these changes are intended to streamline YouTube’s business.
However, he did not specify how many employees were being affected. “As we’ve seen over the last few years, our creator base continues to broaden and diversify, from our most experienced creators to a new generation of casual creators posting to YouTube for the first time,” Coe wrote.
“General AI tools will foster new forms of creativity and bring even more creators to the platform,” he said. Additionally, “partnerships with music, sports and media companies have fueled our subscription businesses”.
“As the business grows, we have an even greater need to ensure that we are running the business effectively and meeting the needs of all our users,” Coe told employees. Those fired will have the opportunity to apply for other roles at YouTube. However, “it was not clear whether they were guaranteed new positions within the company”.
“Each of you has been a valuable and meaningful part of our team, and we will be here to support you as you consider next steps,” Coe said.
