Tata Mumbai Marathon 2024: Pro runner Swati Mukund explains how she uses Apple Watch 9 for tough training

Tata Mumbai Marathon, India’s premier running event, will take place on January 21 this year. Around 57,000 participants will run on the streets of Mumbai, including 40,365 men and 16,180 women. Professional athletes and amateurs have participated in this marathon over the years. For some, it is about winning the race while for others it is about breaking their own fitness records and the joy of staying connected to the Mumbai culture.

For marathon runner Swati Mukund, it’s all about preparing for the big race. “Having been a runner for over 5 years, and loving it more every day, training for the Tata Mumbai Marathon is something I look forward to every year,” she said.

While everyone has their own unique approach towards fitness, Swati incorporated the Apple Watch 9 to track her progress and also see what exactly she can expect to achieve from the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2024.

“I’m also training to run a half marathon this year, and my Apple Watch Series 9 is proof of the progress I’ve made all these years. Especially for this event, I train in the gym twice a week where I do strength and weight training workouts, and I run three times a week,” said Swati.

As for the Apple Watch 9, she uses it regularly for long distance runs. “I press the workout icon on my watch and start my “outdoor run” and, of course, plug in my Apple Music playlist on my AirPods. For speed runs I use the Nike Running app to track my laps and it gives me an idea of what my entire schedule looks like. My further training changes from time to time as per the current pace with which I am comfortable.”

The Workout app on watchOS 10 includes all-new running form metrics like vertical oscillation, stride length, and ground contact time. There are several metrics to help you get the most from your running workout.

Vertical Oscillation: Tap to estimate the distance your body travels vertically when you run in centimeters. This measurement, along with stride length, can give you a sense of how much energy you are using in driving up versus forward. Apple Watch can automatically log your vertical oscillation during outdoor running workouts.

Running Stride Length: Tap to estimate the distance you cover from step to step while running in the meter. Along with cadence, stride length determines your overall running speed. Apple Watch can automatically log your running stride length during outdoor running workouts. For the best stride length estimate, run about 200 meters to calibrate your Apple Watch.

Ground Contact Time: Tap to add an estimate in milliseconds of the time each foot spends touching the ground while running. Apple Watch can automatically log your ground contact time during outdoor running workouts.

Heart Rate Zone: Tap Include to add a heart rate zone to get an idea of your intensity level.

Walking power: Tap Include to get an estimate of the work you’re doing while running, measured in watts. Running power reflects the intensity of your running and can give you a sense of your effort as your speed or inclination changes. Apple Watch can automatically log your running power during outdoor running workouts. Running power is only reported during running workouts and may not capture any additional load, such as a weighted rucksack.

Height: Tap Include to show your altitude while you’re running.

Race your last or best time with Race Route – As you run, your Apple Watch will show you a comparison of your current and past races. You can check your progress to see how far ahead or behind you are, as well as how much distance is left. You’ll also receive an “Off Route” notification if you run off course. If you are near the starting point of a previous route, available routes will appear as suggested workouts. To see all routes, tap Suggested, then tap Routes.

To prepare for long-distance runs, you need to save Apple Watch battery. Here’s how you can do it.

Use low power mode. This disables the Always On Display. You can sync music, podcasts, and audiobooks directly to your Apple Watch ahead of time to stay focused. If you bring your iPhone with you, your watch can use Bluetooth for battery-intensive tasks like connectivity, streaming music or podcasts, accessing Siri, etc. If your long-distance run is late in the day, you can conserve battery life by turning off mobile data and the Always On display a few hours before the run.
