Supreme Court rejects AAP’s Satyendar Jain’s bail plea to return to Tihar

In May last year, Satyendar Jain was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court.

Former Delhi health minister and AAP leader Satyendar Jain returned to Tihar jail on Monday, officials said, hours after the Supreme Court rejected his regular bail plea in a money laundering case.

“Jain reached Tihar Jail in the evening. After admission formalities were completed, he was taken to Jail No. 7,” a jail official said.

Officials said the 69-year-old man underwent a medical examination before being sent to a solitary cell at the jail.

Wearing a green T-shirt and a back pain belt, Jain left his residence in Saraswati Vihar in northwest Delhi to hand himself over to jail at around 5:45 pm.

He hugged his wife and other family members before leaving home. His wife and a relative accompanied him by car. Jain has two daughters. Other relatives came in another car.

The Supreme Court rejected an oral plea filed by Jain’s lawyers to allow him to surrender within a week. On January 17, the Supreme Court reserved its ruling on his regular bail plea.

Jain was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on health grounds on May 26, 2023, after he fell down in the bathroom of Tihar Jail. The bail period is extended from time to time. He also underwent spinal surgery in June last year.

Jain has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court’s April 6, 2023 order dismissing his regular bail application in the case.

The ED arrested the AAP leader on May 30, 2022, on charges of money laundering through four companies allegedly linked to him.

It arrested Jain based on a CBI FIR registered in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
