The Florida Supreme Court ruled Monday that a 15-week abortion ban will remain in place, further allowing voters to decide on a proposed amendment that would decide the fate of the state’s abortion ban. nbc news the report said.

The law was passed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2022.

In 2023, just before DeSantis launched his presidential bid, he signed a law banning abortion in the state six weeks later, sparking an outcry from women who stressed that many did not even find out they were pregnant in such a short time pregnant.

The Supreme Court later announced that the six-week ban law would remain blocked until a final decision was made on the 15-week proposal.

To decide whether to keep the ban, Floridians will vote “yes” or “no” on abortion polls.

The amendment needs to be approved by 60% of the population before it can be enacted into law.

If the bill passes, voters could revoke the 15-week and six-week bans.

In addition to Florida, states such as Ohio, Michigan and Kansas have passed pro-abortion rights ballot measures since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down longstanding abortion rights nationwide in 2022.
