Dozens of Afghans who fled the Taliban after risking their lives to help Britain in the 20-year conflict are to be housed in an army camp in Wales.

Camp East can accommodate up to 180 people and will be used by families eligible under the Afghanistan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP).

ARAP supports those who work for or with the UK Government british armed forces exist Afghanistansuch as an interpreter.

Ministers have previously acknowledged widespread criticism of delays in relocating people, who face death threats. Talibanis due to lack of suitable accommodation.

An MoD spokesman said: “We are grateful to the brave Afghans who risk their lives alongside our troops to support the UK mission.

“To ensure ARAP eligible families can start settled life in the UK as quickly as possible, the UK Government is providing transition and settlement accommodation on defense estates, including East Camp St Athan.

“Eligible Afghans will be temporarily housed there for approximately six weeks before being moved to more stable accommodation.”

Afghan citizens who are eligible to relocate to the UK under ARAP can come with their partners, dependent children and other family members who the Ministry of Defense considers eligible and suitable for relocation by the Home Office.

People arriving in the UK under the scheme can stay in the UK indefinitely.

The MoD said it was working with the Welsh Government and Vale of Glamorgan Council to ensure the project is managed “with everyone in mind”, especially those who live locally.
