BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns have hired former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey as their new offensive coordinator, sources tell ESPN.
Dorsey succeeds Alex Van Pelt, who served as Cleveland’s offensive coordinator for the past four seasons. However, head coach Kevin Stefanski has made demands on the Browns’ offensive strategy since taking over in 2020.
The Browns and quarterbacks coach Van Pelt parted ways earlier this month, and the team is looking for a new voice to work with quarterback Deshaun Watson.
The Bills fired Dorsey on Nov. 14 after Buffalo’s offense struggled and got off to a 5-5 start. Buffalo rallied behind interim offensive coordinator Joe Brady and won the AFC East title. The Bills removed Brady’s interim title tag on Sunday.
Dorsey was promoted to Buffalo offensive coordinator in 2022 when his predecessor, Brian Daboll, was hired as head coach of the New York Giants. Dorsey previously served as the Bills’ quarterbacks coach and was endorsed by star quarterback Josh Allen following Daboll’s departure.
But this season under Dorsey, Buffalo’s offense failed to score more than 25 points from Week 5 until he was fired in Week 10 as turnovers plagued Allen and the Bills.
In Cleveland, Dorsey will be responsible for helping Watson return to form after two inconsistent seasons with the Browns.
Watson has played in just 11 games in two seasons since being traded to Cleveland. He also had a QBR of just 41.9 (0 to 100) with the Browns, which ranked near the bottom in the NFL. Watson is also recovering from season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder.
Dorsey served as quarterback for the Browns from 2006 to 2008.
