Bills name Joe Brady OC, remove interim tag

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Bills have promoted interim offensive coordinator Joe Brady to full-time offensive coordinator, laying the groundwork for the team to turn things around, advance to the playoffs and capture the AFC East title in 2023 Base.

The Bills announced the decision Sunday, a week after the season ended with a 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round. Brady was named interim offensive coordinator on Nov. 14 after Ken Dorsey was fired.

Quarterback Josh Allen backed Brady into taking on the role during the team’s locker room cleanup on Monday.

“I would totally accept it. I love Joe,” Allen said. I love what he brings to this team, our offense, the energy he has, the passion he has for football. How much he’s prepared for tough situations over the last seven to eight weeks. Yeah. , I totally accept that…Obviously there’s things to go on before that. I know there’s probably going to be an interview process and stuff like that, but he’s got my vote.”

Brady, 34, becomes the third offensive coordinator Allen, 27, has worked with as a pro in his six-year career. Dorsey was hired as offensive coordinator in 2022 after he was originally hired by the Bills as quarterbacks coach. The moves come as Brian Daboll leaves the coordinator position to become head coach of the New York Giants. Allen spent his first four seasons in the NFL calling plays alongside Daboll.

After Brady took over the game in Week 11, the Bills ranked second in the NFL in designed rushing percentage (46.5%) and ranked 26th (35.5%) from Weeks 1-10. Allen’s rushing attempts also increased, rushing 48 times in the first 10 games and 83 times in the next nine games.

In addition to the increase in the ground game, Allen’s interceptions per tackle dropped from 3.1% to 2.3%, while corresponding with the running game, the average time on the ball increased from 29:50 to 34:38. The offense improved as Brady spent more time in that role.

The team achieved a record of 7 wins and 2 losses during this period, including the playoffs, and ended the regular season with six consecutive wins, which was the key for the Bills to win the AFC East and enter the playoffs.

This is Brady’s second full-time job as an NFL offensive coordinator, having held the position with the Carolina Panthers from 2020 until his firing during the 2021 season. Prior to that, he served as LSU’s passing coordinator during the 2019 season, helping quarterback Joe Burrow win the Heisman Trophy that year and leading the team to a national championship. Brady and coach Sean McDermott both played football at the College of William and Mary.

I thought Joe did a great job establishing great communication, collaboration and atmosphere with Josh,” McDermott said last week. “And then I think you saw the results throughout the process and I believe it was six game, so I thought he did a really good job at that.”

Players in the locker room cited the energy Brady brought after taking over as part of what makes him stand out, in addition to his communication.

With Brady taking over midway through the season, he hasn’t had a chance to fully implement his system or make significant changes to the offense this offseason.

“We run the ball really well, stick with that,” Allen said of the offense under Brady. “I think [we] Back to some simpler concepts. Do better with him. … I know that if that’s the route we go down, there’s going to be some changes in what we’re going to do systematically, which is what I’m hoping for, and to have some good conversations with him. Just seeing what is possible makes me excited. “
